Why do women’s clothes button from the left, while men’s button from the right?

It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers might adhere to uniform standards for the various features of garments bought by any given group.

What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is precisely the opposite of the one for men. If the standard were completely arbitrary, that would be one thing. But the men’s standard would appear to make more sense for women as well.

Around 90 per cent of the world’s population is right-handed, and it is easier for right-handers to button shirts from the right. So why do women’s garments button from the left?

This is an example in which history seems to matter. When buttons first appeared in the 17th century, they were seen only on garments of the wealthy. At that time it was the custom for rich men to dress themselves and for women to be dressed by servants.

Having women’s shirts button from the left thus made things easier for the mostly right-handed servants who dressed them. Having men’s shirts button from the right made sense not only because most men dressed themselves, but also because a sword drawn from the left hip with the right hand would be less likely to become caught in the shirt. Today, virtually no women are dressed by servants, so why is buttoning from the left still the norm for women?

In economics, a norm, once established, resists change. At a time when all women’s shirts buttoned from the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer women’s shirts that buttoned from the right.

After all, women had grown accustomed to shirts that buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch.

Beyond that practical difficulty, some women might also have found it socially awkward to appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the right, since anyone who noticed would assume they were wearing men’s shirts.

So to continue with my new years resolution, which somewhat unusually started early back in December last year (or perhaps incredibly late depending on how you look at it), here is another ‘shout-out’ to a blog that I regularly read (or should that be read regularly) and enjoy. (Click here for previous shout outs)

Today’s blog is called “Misanthropic Musing” and is quite rare for me, in that I actually know the person who writes it, someone who lives in my apartment building (rare in that the vast majority of blogs I read have been found while meandering aimlessly on the internet, a hobby I am sure is not unique to me).

Anyway, Misanthropic Musings is a unique blend of politics (Good News?), religion (Too many Messiahs), social commentary (Christmas Pyjamas, I'm aah, conflicted ...) and photography (here and here), sprinkled with a delicious turn of phrase, but often descends into an enjoyably ranting critique that is exactly what a good blog should be. However, it is actually co-written by Glen (the person I know) and his daughter (who I think is more like the publisher). Now I am not sure whether Glen admitted this publicly on his blog, or only to his email subscribers, but it appears that his publisher sets very strict Sunday evening deadlines, which may not be so great for him, but it works out well for us in that there is new material to read every Monday morning, at exactly the time when my nose is millimeters away from the new week’s grind.

Now of course like all things on the internet, it’s not that I share all of Glen’s views on religion or politics or even his social commentary, but I do share his passion for having a laugh, voicing an opinion, and wasting time on the internet.

So today’s shout out goes to Glen (and his daughter) from Misanthropic musing.

PS. There was also a very memorable post on Glen’s unusual relationship with Brisbane, which I haven’t been able to find, but certainly worth the read, if you ever get a hold of it (and which I will provide a link if)

Facebook like button on every post?

If you match the following criteria, I would very much like to hear from you:

1. Do you own or run a blogspot/blogger blog?

2. Have you been able to put a facebook like button either at the top or bottom of every blog post (even when more than one post appears on the same page, such as your home page)?

3. Are you willing to tell me how to do it?

The main reason for this is that over the last week or so I have managed to do a lot of small things on my blog, such as update my "About", add a related post widget, start a facebook page, spam my facebook friends, and generally have a good time wasting my holidays on the internet. However no matter how hard I try cutting and pasting various combinations of greater than, div, id, slash, quot, br, equals, false, slash, and less than, I can't seem to get the like button to appear on each and every blog post except when there is only one blog post per page.

Can anyone help?

News flash - the yellow wiggle has been replaced by the yellow wiggle.

As long time readers would know, I am a bit of a fan of the Wiggles (see ReWiggled - Bigger than the Beatles and What have I become?)

However, I can't believe that they are replacing the yellow wiggle with the yellow wiggle (you can see in this picture the ceremonial handing over of the yellow jersey).

Of course rumours have immediately started as to why the old yellow wiggle (that is young Sam Moran) was replaced by the new yellow wiggle (that is old Greg Page), but I am not going to speculate any further, except to say that *shock horror* I think I prefer Sam. Anyway, like the title of this post suggests, the only thing I can look forward to now is Sam's solo recording of "dropped like a hot potato hot potato".

As I promised on Boxing day last year (Is blogging a pleasure or a pain?), the holidays is when I get the most blogging done, (provided I have internet access) as that is when I have the most time to think, to write, to come up with crazy ideas, new blog segments and just plain useless and pointless things to blog about.

Well for those of you who visit my blog regularly you will see all the changes, but for those of you who have subscribed either through blogger or google reader or in some other way, you may not have noticed all the things I have done.

In short, I have added extra links here and there, have finally given up my Simpsonised me, and totally rewritten the "About" description at the top right of my blog. Here is what it now says:

"Daily Vowel Movements exists to provide you with at least one funny thing to look at each day. We waste our time on the Internet so that you don’t have to. The average time spent on any web page in the world is 56 seconds, so if you finish reading this paragraph, look at one or two posts then stare out the window for 8 seconds we will be above average. Woman falls after bungee cord snaps

You may or may not have seen this already, but incredibly a woman survived after the cord from her bungee jump snapped after which she then fell into apparently crocodile infested waters (the Zambezi river, which divides Zambia and Zimbabwe). Not only that but she then had to swim under water to unhook the cord which had got caught on something in the river. Following that she nearly also died when her rescuers got her out and placed her on her back, which meant she couldn't breathe because of all the water she had swallowed.

You can watch the actual footage of the cord snapping and the interminable beeping out of her friends and onlookers swearing, or snippets from an interview with the survivor herself. Amazing!

The Post Secret blog

While this blog probably doesn’t need a ‘shout-out’, given that it is the largest advertisement-free Blog in the world (and coming up to 500 million page views), it is one that I follow and enjoy (for the most part). It is the Post Secret blog.

What is it? Well from the font of all knowledge, its wikipedia entry states that it “is an ongoing community mail art project, created by Frank Warren, in which people mail their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard”.

Here is a picture of the post secret template:

While some of the post secrets are not what you would normally view (or want to view) on the Internet, the secrets can range from inspiring or uplifting, to sad or depressing, to downright perverted or abusive.

Sadly, it is this last category (the perverted or abusive secrets), which is why the post secret app had to be closed down on 1 January 2012. In fact in a public statement on the post secret blog as to why the app had to be withdrawn, Frank Warren said the following among other things:

“Bad content caused users to complain to me, Apple and the FBI. I was contacted by law enforcement about bad content on the App. Threats were made against users, moderators and my family.”

This entry to the app is somewhat prophetic in its content.

The normal blog continues along and has not suffered the same problems as the app, primarily because the secrets have to be sent in paper form to Frank Warren, who along with a team of volunteers then appropriately filters out the problem postcards.

Anyway, for what it is worth, here is a big shout out to Frank Warren and the Post Secret blog.

How to prevent sending half written text messages and emails

Here is a fool proof way never to send a text message or email before you have finished. The very last thing I do is enter the address, or the recipient of the message / mail. This way if you accidentally hit the send or enter button it will not go anywhere as there is no address or number for it to be sent.

I always read or hear stories about people who have 'accidentally' sent half typed emails or messages.

What is a post-position?

I am sure that in one of the many times you have discussed grammar and language you have heard about, or even better, you actually know what a preposition is. They are words like above, behind, between, under, in, or on, and they are used to describe how things are in space or time. But have you ever heard of a postposition?

I have recently discovered that Japanese (but not only Japanese) doesn't have prepositions to do this grammatical job, but it has postpositions. And I think that is cool, both the word and the difference with English.

More interestingly, the only english postposition I have been able to find is the word 'ago'.

Does anyone know of any others?

The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo

The art work that I have captioned today is none other than "The Creation of Adam" by Michaelangelo Buonarroti. Most of you will know that it is located on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (not the sister chapel that I grew up thinking it was). Perhaps I should highlight as I have before that I am no expert on art, but this picture is amazing for all it says about the relationship between God and man (primarily the great effort that God is going to reach Adam, and the almost complete apathy that Adam is showing towards God).

Today's word is mondegreen, which means mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near homophony, in a way that gives it a new meaning.

Up until last week I had never heard of the term until Di from Snippets and Scraps used it in her post about the David Jones Window display.

The middle line is often heard or quoted as “of the cross eyed bear that you gave to me”

Have you ever heard of Mumbil?

I grew up in a town not far from another town called Mumbil, sorry what was that name you asked again, that's right near a town called Mumbil. Apart from the obvious question of why anybody would ever call a town Mumbil, during the time that I lived near the town called Mumbil, it became famous for the "Mumbil murders".

What are the Mumbil murders I hear you ask?

Well basically there is a tip (rubbish dump) near Mumbil and one day when a Mumbil tip worker was bulldozering (is that a word) some of the rubbish, the bulldozer tipped over two lockers (you know the ones from schools) and out popped two bodies. He immediately called the police and there was a big investigation and I think it was years after someone was eventually convicted and put in gaol.

Even more reason why I know about the Mumbil murders is that one of the suspects lived only a couple of houses up the street from us (although he was ultimately cleared of any part in the whole fiasco, but hopefully that doesn't take away too much of the drama to the story).

Anyway, you are probably asking why am I now writing about it on my blog?

Well poor old Mumbil is in the news again, for unfortunately another murder mystery. An article from the Daily Telegraph today is entitled "Appeal for help in Mumbil cold case" which details a shooting which occurred 1996, which may or may not have links to a bikie gang or gangs, and also talks about how new DNA technology is being used which could greatly assist in solving the murder.

Let's hope they solve it, but in honour of my links to good old Mumbil, which doesn't really have the brightest of pasts nor the brightest of futures, I thought I would give a big shout out to Mumbil, or anyone who has ever heard of the place.

Kirribilli Kim and Vanishing Point

I have been blogging for a few years now and being a blogger one of the things I do is follow other blogs (over 100). However along with a few other things I have started in December, another thing I thought I would do is to start giving a shout out to some of the other blogs that I keep up with. Interestingly most of the blogs are run by people I have never met in person, nor even had any communication at all, (apart from the odd comment here and there on each others blogs).

Anyway starting in no particular order, I thought I would outline Kirribilli Kim and Vanishing Point.

The first one is Kirribilli Kim, which is run by someone called Kim who lives in Kirribilli (my investigative skills are incredible). She is from somewhere in America and has lots of interesting photos of herself and others on her blog (including lots of fun photos with her arms out and / or in some type of reverse planking pose). Though one of the best things about her blog is her observation of language. A few that I have loved are lost the plot, ripper, how did you find, flats, wouldn’t say no to, and to be over something.

Second is Vanishing Point. This is run by a guy called Ben, who used to live somewhere in the inner west and now lives somewhere down south. It appears that some people I know comment on his blog, but not sure whether they just follow his blog like I do, or if they actually know him (unlike me). He has been doing a lot of gardening lately, loves snoopy and drawing, and one of the most ingenious things I have seen him do is to get other people to write his blog for him (see the Book Review Wednesday - brilliant). However the thing I have really been enjoying lately on his blog are his train observations. Some of his best are After you, laptop, train people, tatts ahoy, anschlag, train people and Yawn to be Wild.

Anyway, stay tuned to find out about the other blogs I follow, but as for today, a big shout out to Ben and Kim.

The one-eyed Rockhopper penguin

As I was flicking through the tv tonight I briefly came across a show called "Michaela's Animal Road Trip". During this time they were showing and talking about the recovery of a Rockhopper penguin who had lost an eye. One of the vets / zoo keepers said the following, after which everyone was left in silence about whether to laugh or just carry on:

"Of course a one-eyed rockhopper penguin in captivity will cope a lot better than a penguin with one eye out in the wild, but over the next few days and weeks we will certainly be keeping an eye on him"

A 90 year old woman, named Beryl, was caught drink driving with a blood alcohol reading of 0.23. Incredible that she is still driving at 90. Incredible that she recorded 0.23. Incredible that she was only given a good behaviour bond. Incredible that she is going to appeal the sentence. Incredible! (and I don't often use exclamation marks).

The wednesday Word - lactomangulation

Today's word is lactomangulation (lak’ to man gyu lay’ shun), which means manhandling the “open here” spout on a milk container so badly that one has to resort to the ‘illegal’ side.

Without wanting to offender the H.A.A ***, let me say upfront that hankerchiefs are disgusting. The idea that you would blow your nose on something and then put it back in your pocket for an undisclosed period of time, before getting it back out and doing the same thing all over again is just plain disgusting. Along with smoking, dawdling and nosepicking (which is somewhat related), the use of hankerchiefs should be banned in public (what people want to do behind closed doors is up to them).

In case you weren't aware, and I assume that you none of you are (unless you have been hacking into my blogger account, and if you are please stop) but this is my 989th post since starting this blog. As the 1000 mark approaches I am not sure whether I should be celebrating or crying into my cereal about reaching such a milestone. I remember when I first held this little blog in my server, and thought what will it grow up to be, and now it is so close to its 1000th blog post.

Perhaps I am getting a little too sentimental about this?
Is there such a thing as a mid-blog crisis?
Should I go and update my header to a new flash red convertible style?
Should I invest in a sidebar comb-over?

Does anyone have any advice, or know the correct internet etiquette for a blog that is about to turn 1000.
